Although archaeological investigations in the Pattani basin have not provided sufficient information to define early historic patterns of settlement, they have helped to clarify the structure and history of the two main site complexes in the Pattani basin. At the Yarang complex, the mapping of the moated site near Ban Wat (PN-D-02) and testing of the deposits demonstrate the presence of an early historic ceremonial centre. The site may have been established as a religious centre as early as the sixth century and later developed into a centre of Mahayana Buddhism similar to Buddhist sites in central Java and Sri vi jay and Sumatra. Subsurface testing at Prawae indicates that the site was probably first occupied in approximately the twelfth century, but continued in use until the 1791 Patani rebellion. It may have served primarily as a late historic Patani Malay fort. The Kerisik complex is clearly the site of the important Islamic period seaport of Patani, whose further investigation will produce much valuable evidence about this Malay kingdom.
